My Lands: Black Gem Hunting

I actually just ran my first attack on a ruin and believe they are used to carry the resources I plunder back to my castle. I think you are simply referring to the general population, right?

Exactly what is their function? I'm amassing them per the 10k newbie quest, but their purpose is unclear to me.
